Illinois Nurses Association Endorses JB Pritzker for Governor

Friday, February 23, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, the Illinois Nurses Association endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. At an announcement event in Chicago, JB discussed his plans to expand healthcare for working families, advocate for better working conditions for nurses, and protect collective bargaining rights for workers. The Illinois Nurses Association joins U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, the Illinois AFL-CIO, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and the Illinois Education Association in their endorsement of JB for governor.

“Today, I am so incredibly proud to accept the endorsement of the Illinois Nurses Association in this campaign for governor,” said JB Pritzker. “Bruce Rauner came to Springfield and launched attack after attack on hardworking families. He is so determined to take us backwards, he is partnering with Donald Trump and trying to dismantle our labor movement at the Supreme Court. We can’t let them win. We face some enormous challenges in this state and we have a fight ahead of us, but I know we’re ready. We’re going to stand with working families, we’re going to come together as Illinoisans, and we’re going to get our state back on track.”

“INA proudly endorses JB Pritzker for governor. Society can depend on him to support maintaining healthcare when he is elected governor,” said Lorraine Wade, Director of the Illinois Nurses Association.

“JB understands that the people of Illinois need safe healthcare and he understands that means having enough nurses to provide safe care,”  said Doris Carroll, Vice President of the Illinois Nurses Association.

JB Pritzker has Clear Record of Investing in Women Owned Companies and Promoting Diversity

Friday, February 23, 2018

New Ad, “Support,” Highlights JB’s Record of Leadership

Chicago, IL – Today, the JB Pritzker campaign released a digital ad “Support,” highlighting JB’s work to lift up diverse Illinois entrepreneurs.

For decades, JB has made it a priority to mentor diverse entrepreneurs and invest in women-owned businesses, identifying and taking concrete steps to address the lack of diversity across the investment and technology industries. In 2012, JB founded 1871, a nonprofit small business incubator, recognized as leading the way to help women entrepreneurs. And JB was proud that Pritzker Group was recently recognized as being the top firm in the nation for investing in women-owned businesses.

WATCH: “Support”

“JB is proud of his record of promoting, mentoring, and investing in women in the technology and investment industries,” said Pritzker communications director Galia Slayen. “In fact, JB’s firm was recently recognized as the top firm in the country for investing in women-owned businesses and 1871 continues to lead the way in creating more diversity in tech. In the technology world, in his business, and in the many organizations he’s involved in throughout Illinois, JB’s record of creating spaces and opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs to thrive is clear.”

“When you’re getting a business off the ground, there are always people behind the scenes.  Some people are mentors and some people are sponsors,” said Suzanne Muchin, Co-founder and Principal of Mind + Matter Studio. “Mentors offer their opinions and advice, but sponsors back you, bring you into the right rooms, and make sure you have a seat at the right table. JB is a sponsor of women. He’s been a champion of mine, and for women around the country, for years. He plays this role without being asked, without any agenda other than simply wanting good people to have opportunities to succeed.”

“He has influenced my life a lot and in significant ways, but I would say JB’s influenced far more than just myself,” said Neal Sales-Griffin, CEO, CodeNow. “You can go around and talk to any entrepreneur, any aspiring entrepreneur, and they’ll know his name and they’ll know how important his contributions have been to this community, and how important they will be in years to come. JB knows there’s work to do and he’s been a big part of supporting me and others in this business.”

“I’m the CEO of a tech company in which the Pritzker Group has not invested, yet JB and his team have been there for us for years,” said Amanda Lannert, CEO of Jellyvision. “Several of his partners have provided mentorship, without any chance of any potential return.  I truly think they are trying to just be helpful, and to create more wins for our community. Suffice it to say I’m a fan.”

“I’ve spent the last few months considering which candidate I would support for governor,” said State Representative Mike Halpin. “As I went door-to-door to hear directly from the people I serve in the State Legislature, the thing that I heard the most is that people want a governor that they can count on to be on the side of working men and women. I know that they can bring Democrats together to beat Bruce Rauner in November.”

Chicago City Council’s Veterans Caucus Endorses JB Pritzker for Governor

Thursday, February 22, 2018

Members Demand Rauner Take Responsibility for Gross Mismanagement

Chicago, IL – Today, the Chicago City Council’s Veterans Caucus endorsed JB Pritzker at a press conference in front of the partially-constructed Veterans’ Home in Chicago that has been delayed by Bruce Rauner’s constant crises. At the press conference, JB and members of the caucus held Bruce Rauner accountable for his fatal mismanagement of the Quincy Veterans’ Home and discussed JB’s plans to fight for Illinois Veterans.

“The obligation we have to our Veterans and their families is sacred, and to have that obligation so thoroughly neglected by Bruce Rauner is an unconscionable moral failing,” said JB Pritzker. “This is what happens when a governor refuses to take charge. Veterans young and old across this state deserve the opportunity to succeed and I’m proud to be running on a real plan to support our Veterans so we can build stronger families and communities. With these leaders standing with me today, I know we can create real opportunity for every Illinois Veteran to thrive.”

“JB Pritzker will be the governor for Veterans,” said Veterans Caucus Chair Gilbert Villegas. “He understands the challenges that Veterans face and is ready to step up and help our community. He will lead the change when it comes to making Illinois the best state for Veterans.”

Organizations like Equality Illinois PAC, Personal PAC, and Citizen Action/Illinois are mobilizing their members and building the statewide coalition needed to ensure JB wins the Democratic nomination for governor.

Together, I know we can take on Bruce Rauner, put Springfield back on the side of working families, and move forward with a progressive vision for Illinois.”

“Citizen Action/Illinois and our statewide, progressive coalition is ready to get to work for JB Pritzker,” said Citizen Action/Illinois Co-Director William McNary. “We are thrilled by the opportunity to elect JB and bring true, progressive leadership to Illinois. With over a decade of experience fighting grassroots campaigns for affordable, high-quality healthcare, a fair tax system, and stronger environmental protections, we’re confident our coalition will play a critical role supporting JB for governor.”

We’re proud to help JB get out the vote because of his unwavering commitment to reproductive justice and woman’s rights. The next 26 days will be critical for women’s rights in Illinois, and Personal PAC will be supporting JB every single day to ensure we send a pro-choice governor to Springfield.”

Cairo Students Defend Themselves After Chris Kennedy Says “Zero Percent” are College Ready

Thursday, February 22, 2018

Kennedy Doubles Down on Bad Mouthing Cairo Students

Chicago, IL – After Chris Kennedy made repeated statements bad mouthing public school students across Illinois, a group of Cairo students came together with community leaders to denounce the flailing candidate for governor.

Throughout his campaign, Kennedy has attacked public schools in Illinois saying, “zero percent of kids in Cairo are college-ready,” and that students in Springfield public schools are “doomed to a life of economic oppression.” When Cairo students and community leaders pointed out that the overwhelmingly majority of Cairo High School Students have been accepted to college and 10 of the 24 members of the Class of 2018 were already taking college classes, Kennedy still refused to back down and instead carelessly pointed to SAT scores.

“Chris Kennedy ‘applauded’ Bruce Rauner for creating a crisis for public education in Illinois and is now badmouthing the same students impacted by that crisis,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Kennedy’s comments undercut the future leaders of this state and entirely disregard the hard work these students have put in to their own education.”

REALITY CHECK: Dan Biss Voted to Increase Charter Funding at Expense of Public Schools

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

While Dan Biss praises public education on the campaign trail, he voted to shift tax dollars from neighborhood public schools to charter schools in 2012, despite strong opposition from teachers unions and progressive groups. Biss’ support for charter schools comes as no surprise given his unequivocal statement in 2010: “I support the charter school movement,” and the tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions he’s accepted from a pro-charter group that fought for school privatization.

REALITY CHECK

  • In 2012, Dan Biss voted for HB 4277, which increased charter funding at the expense of neighborhood public schools.
  • Chicago Public Schools alone would have lost $126 million a year if the bill passed.
  • The Illinois Federation of Teachers, Illinois Education Association, Chicago Teachers Union, and Citizen Action/Illinois all opposed HB 4277.
  • In 2010, Biss wrote, “I support the charter school movement,” in a Chicago Tribune questionnaire where he noted he was a “long-time” charter school volunteer.
  • Biss has accepted $66,000 from Stand for Children.

REALITY CHECK: JB Pritzker Has a Plan to Expand Healthcare for Illinois Families

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

JB is committed to defending the progress we’ve made under the Affordable Care Act and building on that progress to ensure all Illinoisans have quality care. JB was the first candidate in this race to put forward a comprehensive plan to expand healthcare for Illinois’ working families. In early August, JB introduced his plan, IllinoisCares, which would allow every Illinois resident to have access to quality, affordable healthcare through a public option. If implemented, Illinois would be the first state in the nation to expand healthcare in this way, at little to no cost to the taxpayer.

REALITY CHECK:

  • JB’s plan for healthcare, IllinoisCares, would be a first-in-the-nation program allowing Illinois residents to buy into the state’s Medicaid program.
  • The Medicaid buy-in option would expand quality, affordable healthcare for Illinois’ working families across the state.
  • JB has also been a fierce advocate for President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, running a statewide ad campaign to encourage Illinoisans to sign up after Donald Trump slashed the advertising budget and shortened the enrollment period.

REALITY CHECK: Dan Biss Accepted Contributions from We Mean Business PAC

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Despite using We Mean Business PAC as a talking point, Dan Biss cashed two checks totaling $15,000 from the very same organization. Those contributions came as Biss was writing and passing the unconstitutional pension bill that cut benefits for 467,000 teachers, university workers, and state employees. Since the bill was blocked by the Illinois Supreme Court, Biss has taken heat for his “flip-flop” as he tries to back away from the same bill he wrote.

REALITY CHECK

  • After flip-flopping on pensions at the Crain’s editorial board, Biss was asked, “if you can so completely change your opinion on something you spent so much time and energy on, what can people trust you not to change your opinion on?”
  • Dan Biss received two contributions totaling $15,000 from We Mean Business PAC.
  • Biss “helped write” and led efforts to pass the pension bill that was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and cut pension benefits promised to over 467,000 state workers.
  • While Biss attacks JB for donating to We Mean Business PAC, the donation came two years before Biss authored the unconstitutional pension bill.

REALITY CHECK: Dan Biss Led Efforts to Cut Benefits for Working Families

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

In 2013, Dan Biss helped write legislation to slash pensions for hundreds of thousands of workers, earning him the lowest lifetime AFL-CIO rating of any Democrat in the Senate. Were it not for the Supreme Court stepping in and ruling Biss’ bill unconstitutional,  the bill would have had a devastating effect on Illinois workers.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Dan Biss helped write legislation to cut pensions for more than 467,000 downstate teachers, university workers, and state employees.
  • Biss also voted for $1.6 billion in cuts to Medicaid and to strip some employees of collective bargaining rights.
  • Biss’ attacks on working families in the General Assembly earned him a 62% lifetime rating from the AFL-CIO through 2015, the worst of any Democrat in the State Senate.

JB has played a critical role in making Chicago one of the top tech hubs in the world. JB was named co-chair of ChicagoNEXT, a council aimed at creating tech jobs in 2012, and that same year he founded 1871, which has helped create over 7,000 jobs in Illinois. REALITY CHECK: Dan Biss Voted for Mike Madigan and Ran Madigan’s SuperPAC

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Despite trying to put daylight between himself and Mike Madigan now, Dan Biss is closer to the House Speaker than he’d like to admit. Biss accepted Madigan’s help to get elected to office in 2010 and then voted for Madigan for Speaker the following year. Biss accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Speaker’s state party. In 2016, he even ran Madigan’s Super PAC. While Biss uses anti-Madigan campaign rhetoric on the campaign trail, his years of loyalty to the Speaker tell a much different story.

REALITY CHECK:

  • In 2010, Dan Biss accepted Madigan’s help to get elected, receiving $14,374.35 in in-kind contributions from Friends of Michael J. Madigan.
  • In 2011, Biss voted for Mike Madigan to be Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives.
  • Over the years, Biss has accepted nearly $250,000 from the Democratic Party chaired by Madigan.

REALITY CHECK: JB Pritzker Will Resist Donald Trump’s Destructive Agenda

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

JB has worked relentlessly to resist Donald Trump every day since the election, going to O’Hare to protest Trump’s travel ban, running an advertising campaign to defend the Affordable Act after funding was slashed, and protesting with Congressman Gutierrez at Trump Tower. As governor, JB will continue to resist by making Illinois a firewall against Donald Trump’s hateful, bigoted agenda. He will protect healthcare for Illinois families, invest in public education, defend our environment, stand with immigrant families, and fight for civil rights for all Illinoisans. The values JB cares about are under siege by Donald Trump and Bruce Rauner is silent. As governor, JB has a real plan to stand with communities across Illinois in resistance.

REALITY CHECK:

  • JB will stand against Donald Trump’s attempts to strip healthcare from Illinois families and expand quality, affordable healthcare to every Illinois resident with his plan, IllinoisCares.

  • JB will bring Illinois’ diverse communities together to stand firm against hate and ensure all Illinoisans have a voice in their government.

Biss Please: New Dan Biss Ad Highlights Lowest Lifetime AFL-CIO Rating of Any Senate Democrat

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Pritzker Campaign Releases New TV Ad: “Last”

Chicago, IL – Today, the Pritzker campaign concludes its new series with a new TV ad, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he’s had the lowest lifetime rating of any Senate Democrat from the Illinois AFL-CIO. Let’s check the record.

Dan Biss has taken a number of votes to reduce worker benefits and limit collective bargaining rights, earning him a dismal 21% rating from the Illinois AFL-CIO in 2012 and the lowest lifetime rating among Senate Democrats. Biss’ votes include cutting pension benefits from 467,000 teachers and nurses, stripping healthcare from over 80,000 retirees, and weakening collective bargaining rights for some public employees.

WATCH — Dan Biss: “Last”

“Dan Biss has voted against the interests of working people throughout his career and earned the lowest lifetime rating from the Illinois AFL-CIO of any Senate Democrat,” said Pritzker communications director Galia Slayen. “When you check the record, it’s clear that hardworking Illinoisans know they can’t trust Biss to stand up for them.”

Biss Please: Dan Biss Voted to Let the State Garnish Wages of Those Who Fall Behind on Student Loans

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Chicago, IL – This week, the Pritzker campaign is continuing a new series, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he voted to let the state garnish wages when people fall behind on student loans. Let’s check the record.

In 2012, Dan Biss joined Republicans when he voted for SB 3800. The bill Biss supported allowed state government to garnish up to 15% of a person’s wages above $217.50 a week, despite what other bills they might have.“Dan Biss joined Republicans to garnish wages of young people struggling under the burden of exorbitant student loan debt,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Biss would rather see government go after our state’s brightest than provide them with the tools they need to contribute to the economy and thrive.”

JB Pritzker Statement on IDCCA’s Sexual Harassment Policy and Pledge

Monday, February 19, 2018

Chicago, IL – JB Pritzker released the following statement on the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association’s Sexual Harassment Policy and Pledge:

“Women should not be forced to accept sexual harassment as the price of admission to a career in politics,” said JB Pritzker. “It’s all of our responsibility to change our culture so that women are always treated with dignity and respect. I stand by the women who have bravely come forward to share their stories and it is clear that we have not done enough. Today, I am proud to sign the IDCCA pledge and will fully implement its proposals in my campaign and in our field offices across the state. In Juliana and my administration, we will ensure there is an independent and external body to investigate all allegations in a timely fashion and there will be zero tolerance for harassment of any kind.”

Biss Please: Dan Biss Voted Against Fire Fighters’ Rights To Negotiate Safe Staffing

Monday, February 19, 2018

Chicago, IL – This week, the Pritzker campaign is continuing a new series, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he voted against fire fighters’ rights to negotiate safe staffing levels. Let’s check the record.

In 2014, Dan Biss voted against a bill supported by the Illinois AFL-CIO and Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois that helped keep first responders safe. HB 5485 simply clarified existing law that staffing levels were part of collective bargaining, saving fire fighters from having to fight for it in court each time. But Biss once again voted against a commonsense union-supported bill that protected hardworking Illinoisans.

“Dan Biss abandoned fire fighters when they needed him to uphold their right to negotiate a key element of workplace safety,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “While our first responders risk their lives to keep us safe, Biss turned his back on them when it really mattered.”

Senator Hutchinson joins U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Secretary of State Jesse White, Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, the Illinois AFL-CIO, and over 30 individual unions in support of JB Pritzker for governor.

Biss Please: Dan Biss Grilled on Pension “Flip-Flop”

Sunday, February 18, 2018

“Your Flip-Flop Here Has Disappointed Many”

Chicago, IL – After flip-flopping on his unconstitutional pension bill, Dan Biss continues to stumble on why he wanted to cut pension benefits for 467,000 teachers, university workers, and state employees.

Friday on Fox 32, Biss was repeatedly pressed on the unconstitutional bill and confronted with the reality that his “flip-flop here has disappointed many.”

WATCH:

“No amount of flip-flopping can reverse the fact that Dan Biss wrote the bill to cut pensions for almost half a million Illinoisans,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Biss’ brazen support for pension theft won’t be forgotten by hardworking families across the state.”

TRANSCRIPT

Flannery: Let’s talk about one of the things he’s hitting you on, which frankly disappointed me, I will say. But first let me just point out that the Cook County Treasurer reports the Blue Island Park District pension fund is funded at 3.77%, the Broadview Public Library District, 13%, Tinley Park Kirby School District, 11.3%. As governor, what would you do when they go bust as they are certainly going to go bust?

Biss: Well we need solutions, right, we need to fund the pension systems properly. In the cases where municipalities need some help, the state government needs to step in with clear…

Flannery: You used to talk about shared sacrifice, but now you’ve thrown in with the public employee unions.

Biss: I wouldn’t say that, I would say that I’ve tried to understand what’s fair and what’s legal.

Flannery: But you’ve repudiated the fixes that you’ve offered before.

Biss: Listen, the Supreme Court overturned that bill and I think they were right to do it. And the question is now how are we going to find constitutional, fair solutions. And I will say that I’ve acknowledged the approach that I was trying before was not the right way to go…

Flannery: But your flip flop here has disappointed many.

Biss: I wouldn’t call it a flip flop. I would call it a learning experience. The Supreme Court has been clear. The Supreme Court has weighed in.

Biss Please: Dan Biss Undermined Collective Bargaining in a Series of Votes

Saturday, February 17, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, the Pritzker campaign is continuing a new series, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he undermined workers’ collective bargaining rights in a series of votes. Let’s check the record.

In 2011, Biss voted for what AFSCME called a “union-busting bill” that “effectively strips thousands of public employees of collective bargaining rights,” according to the Illinois AFL-CIO. In 2012, he voted to refuse to appropriate funds for wage increases, limiting the unions’ ability to collectively bargain. And Biss voted against firefighters’ rights to negotiate staffing levels and against teachers’ ability to strike and the subjects about which they could strike.

“Dan Biss voted for ‘union-busting bills’ that attack collective bargaining rights and leave teachers and firefighters out in the cold,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “While claiming to be a friend to working families on the campaign trail, Biss has repeatedly stood on the opposite side of the labor movement on the issues that matter most.”

Biss Please: Dan Biss Voted to Increase Charter Funding at Expense of Public Schools

Friday, February 16, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, the Pritzker campaign is continuing a new series, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he voted to increase funding for charter schools at the expense of neighborhood public schools. Let’s check the record.

Despite praising public education on the campaign trail, Dan Biss undermined public education by voting to shift tax dollars from neighborhood public schools to charter schools in 2012. CPS alone would have lost $126 million a year if the bill passed, but thanks to strong opposition from teachers unions and progressive groups, the bill was defeated. Biss’ support comes as no surprise given his unequivocal statement in 2010: “I support the charter school movement.”

“Were it not for teachers unions and progressive organizations standing up to him, Dan Biss would’ve stripped money from neighborhood public schools to fill the coffers of charters,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Public school children in Illinois deserve better than politicians like Bruce Rauner and Dan Biss siphoning critical dollars away from their education.”

In The News: Rauner “Balances” Budget on the Backs of Working People

Chicago, IL – Yesterday, Bruce Rauner unveiled his fourth unbalanced budget proposal. While Rauner is already out with a new ad lying about his record to Illinois voters, the press coverage has been a little less friendly. Here’s what Illinoisans are reading in the news about Rauner’s unbalanced budget that hurts working families:

From State Journal-Register: Rauner’s Budget Gets Cool Reception From Lawmakers, Opponents:

Rauner’s proposal would shift downstate teacher pension costs from the state to local school districts, a move critics say would lead to property tax increases.

“His last three budgets haven’t been balanced, so I’m not surprised this one isn’t either,” said Treasurer Mike Frerichs, a Democrat. “But for someone who talked about rolling back property taxes, I was a little surprised to hear him advocate what will be the largest backdoor property tax increase in Illinois history.”

Even within Rauner’s own party, the cost shift proposal has caused some concern. For state Sen. Sam McCann, R-Plainview, who also believes the proposed budget is not balanced, the cost shift is a non-starter. […]

Democrat J.B. Pritzker, the billionaire gubernatorial candidate, was more blunt, saying the governor’s pension math doesn’t work.

“(Rauner) should learn the lesson that Dan Biss learned, which is that pensions are a promise and they need to be delivered to the people they’ve been promised to,” Pritzker said. “The Supreme Court overruled Dan Biss, and the governor should understand it’s time to stand up and pay the pensions.”

From Chicago Sun-Times: It’s Turnaround Time For Gov. Rauner – Using Old ‘Roadmap’ To Chart New Course:

The Turnaround Agenda is back.

Gov. Bruce Rauner doesn’t call it that any more, preferring to stress the individual parts over the label that became too closely associated with the state’s long budget impasse.

But as he polishes up his re-election pitch to Illinois voters, Rauner has made clear his ambitious 44-point prescription for curing Illinois’ ills is back on his plate in all its parts from his popular call for term limits to more controversial proposals to curtail the power and influence of labor unions. […]

Arguably, the Turnaround Agenda never really went away, only moved to the back seat as Rauner tried to maneuver through a rocky first term.

From Chicago Tribune: Rauner Budget Proposal At Odds With Re-Election Rhetoric:

As he asks voters for a second term, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner delivered a budget address Wednesday that was often at odds with what he calls for on the campaign trail.

Candidate Rauner says he wants a freeze on local property taxes, touts changes to increase funding for poorer schools as a key accomplishment and derides the income tax hike lawmakers put in place last year over his veto. But Gov. Rauner, facing pressure to balance the state’s books and live up to his promise to bring savvy financial management to state government, offered a spending plan that undermines much of that platform.

His budget could force local property tax hikes by requiring school districts to pick up the cost of teacher pensions. That move also could wipe out much of the extra money that’s earmarked for schools. And instead of declining to spend the money from the tax hike, it’s integral to his plan.

From Chicago Sun-Times: Rauner Budget Relies On Pension Cuts, Tax Hike He Says He ‘Was Right’ To Veto:

Using funds from an income tax hike he vetoed, Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday said he’d help balance the budget through a change in health insurance benefits for retired teachers and state employees — and a cut to Chicago Public Schools teacher pensions. […]

In his fourth budget proposal — just weeks before a primary election — Rauner is seeking to cut $228 million for Chicago teacher pensions, and $101 million from university pensions.

He’s also proposing the removal of group health insurance for state employees from collective bargaining — a move that will require legislative support that may prove difficult to get.

From Reuters: Illinois Governor Takes Aim At Pensions, Healthcare Costs in Budget:

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner proposed a $75 billion fiscal 2019 budget on Wednesday that would be balanced if lawmakers agree to push some big-ticket costs onto local school districts and universities. […]

The budget envisions shifting certain education-related pension costs to schools and universities by 25 percent annually over a four-year period.

The shift would cost school districts $490 million in fiscal 2019, with a $228 million hit to the cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools. The Illinois Association of School Boards said this would revoke the promise of higher funding under a school financing law enacted last year.

“With the new pension burden, hundreds of school districts will be receiving a cut in education funding under the governor’s budget plan,” the group said in a statement.

From AP: Rauner: Pension, health overhaul needed to balance budget:

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner said Wednesday he could balance the Illinois budget and cut taxes by $1 billion provided the Democratic-controlled General Assembly agrees to make massive changes to the pension system and health insurance benefits for state workers.

Besides again advocating for a constitutionally questionable overhaul of employee pensions, Rauner told lawmakers during a budget address that he wants to shift retirement costs to local school districts and dictate health insurance benefits for state workers. […]

Reassigning responsibility for the employer portion of teacher pensions to school districts would reverse a yearslong practice of the state picking up the tab for all districts outside Chicago and was even extended to that city as a matter of fairness in last summer’s education-funding package. […]

The group health insurance changes would mean union employees would no longer be able to bargain for health care, which Democratic lawmakers are almost certain to oppose.

From Decatur Herald & Review: Rauner Budget Proposal May Add To Decatur Deficit Trouble:

City governments across Illinois, including Decatur, won’t get the relief they were hoping for in Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s 2019 budget proposal introduced Wednesday, which calls for keeping local shares of state income tax revenue at lower levels for another year. […]

The reason: When lawmakers finally passed a budget last summer after two years of gridlock, cities across the state took a hit. The budget cut their share of state income tax by 10 percent, which amounted to about $1 million in revenue for Decatur. It’s a major component of Decatur’s current $3.2 million deficit.

State law calls for returning those shares to prior levels next year. City officials had hoped that provision would limit bigger deficit troubles.

Instead, Rauner’s recommended budget proposal would create a similar-sized loss to city revenue in 2019.

From DeKalb Daily Chronicle: Superintendents React To Proposed Pension Obligations In Rauner’s Budget Address:

But with DeKalb owing a little more than $3 million annually in Teacher Retirement System payments and the district yet to see the extra funds it was supposed to get from the revised funding formula, things might get tough after the first year.

In a budget address delivered Wednesday in Springfield, Rauner said the shifts will come in 25 percent increments a year. He also promised schools and local governments would have the tools they need to offset the costs, including increased education funding, the power to dissolve or consolidate units of local government and more flexibility in contracting, bidding and sharing services.

Rauner’s plan also calls for state universities, including Northern Illinois University, to cover their own pension and health care costs under a phase-in plan, which would be offset with an additional $205 million for fiscal 2019. Rauner estimates these cost shifts could save state government $696 million in the next fiscal year.

From McHenry County Northwest Herald: Some McHenry County Education Officials Concerned About Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Pension Plan:

Leslie Schermerhorn, McHenry County’s regional superintendent of schools, said it’s questionable that there would be any advantage to the plan to pass pension costs to local school districts.

“We can’t eliminate the pensions. So far, the courts have upheld that,” she said. “By passing down pension costs, we are affecting the budgets of the schools, and this will probably end up being passed down to the taxpayers.”

Former Huntley School District 158 Superintendent John Burkey, who now is executive director of the Large Unit District Association, said the proposal to shift pension costs to local schools is alarming.

“I agree that it’s critical that we get our fiscal house in order, and I think what Rauner said about us [needing to be] more competitive compared to surrounding states is true,” he said. “But a part I am very concerned about is the pension shift.”

Not many local school districts will be able to absorb the pension costs without cutting programming or raising property taxes, Burkey said.

“Pension laws were made, and benefits are given by the state of Illinois,” he said. “I believe the state of Illinois needs to bear the responsibility for them.”

From NPR Illinois: On Income Tax, Rauner’s Budget Plan Doesn’t Match Campaign Rhetoric:

When out campaigning, Governor Bruce Rauner has been making big claims about lowering taxes. But there was little follow-through in Wednesday’s budget proposal.

Just last week, Rauner told Sangamon County Republicans not only would he work to block a progressive income tax, but he’d try to get taxes “down lower from where they are today, and bring them back down to 3 percent over the next two years.”

The budget proposal made no mention of 3 percent and no mention of two years.

From State Journal-Register: Reactions to Gov. Rauner’s Budget Address:

A collection of reactions to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget address on Wednesday.

“After three years of crisis and destruction, Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget will continue to devastate Illinois’ working families. Today, we saw a failed governor propose another unbalanced budget as he doubles down on his all-out assault on workers and the social services they need to build better lives. Bruce Rauner desperately ripped a page from Daniel Biss’ playbook, attempting to balance the budget on the backs of public servants by slashing their hard-earned benefits in a potentially unconstitutional scheme. At the same time, Rauner’s budget would have a devastating impact on childcare services, programs for the developmentally disabled, and mental health services, further decimating a social safety net Rauner has relentlessly attacked. As governor, I will provide real leadership and vision to bring our state together and clean up the damage Bruce Rauner has done.” — J.B. Pritzker, Democratic candidate for governor

Biss Please: Dan Biss Voted for Unconstitutional Cuts to Pensions and Healthcare

Thursday, February 15, 2018

Pritzker Campaign Launches New Series Exposing the Real Biss Behind the Campaign Rhetoric

Chicago, IL – Today, the Pritzker campaign is launching a new series, highlighting where Dan Biss’ campaign rhetoric is at odds with his record. Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive, but he voted for unconstitutional cuts to pensions and healthcare. Let’s check the record.

In 2013, Biss wrote the unconstitutional bill that cut pension benefits for 467,000 downstate teachers, university workers, and state employees. This followed a 2012 vote where Biss tried to slash healthcare benefits from nearly 80,000 state retirees and retired suburban and downstate teachers. Both of those efforts were opposed by the Illinois AFL-CIO and ruled unconstitutional by the Illinois Supreme Court.

“Dan Biss led the charge on unconstitutional efforts to undermine pensions for public servants, only to get smacked down by the Supreme Court,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “From cutting pensions for almost half a million Illinoisans to slashing healthcare for 80,000, the Biss record looks a lot closer to Rauner’s latest budget address than that of a true progressive.”

JB Pritzker Response to Another Unbalanced Budget From Bruce Rauner

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, Bruce Rauner gave yet another budget address where he failed to uphold his constitutional duty to introduce a balanced budget and doubled down on his same failed agenda. In response, JB Pritzker issued the following statement:

“After three years of crisis and destruction, Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget will continue to devastate Illinois’ working families,” said JB Pritzker. “Today, we saw a failed governor propose another unbalanced budget as he doubles down on his all-out assault on workers and the social services they need to build better lives. Bruce Rauner desperately ripped a page from Daniel Biss’ playbook, attempting to balance the budget on the backs of public servants by slashing their hard-earned benefits in a potentially unconstitutional scheme.

“At the same time, Rauner’s budget would have a devastating impact on childcare services, programs for the developmentally disabled, and mental health services, further decimating a social safety net Rauner has relentlessly attacked. As governor, I will provide real leadership and vision to bring our state together and clean up the damage Bruce Rauner has done.”

REALITY CHECK: Rauner Has Let Illinois’ Infrastructure Crumble

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Illinois’ role as a transportation hub for the nation is a critical component of our economy, but under Bruce Rauner our state’s infrastructure has crumbled. From highways and railroads to waterways and broadband access, Rauner’s lack of investment has led to maintenance piling up and needed projects going unfunded.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis forced the Illinois Department of Transportation to temporarily suspend all roadwork operations.
  • Nearly one in 10 bridges in Illinois are structurally deficient.
  • Almost 40% of rural Illinoisans have no access to high-speed internet service.
  • More than one in three roads will be in unacceptable condition within five years because of Rauner’s disinvestment.

REALITY CHECK: Bruce Rauner Slashed Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Despite paying lip service to combatting the opioid epidemic, Bruce Rauner has failed Illinois’ families struggling with addiction and mental health issues. As opioid overdoses skyrocketed during his time in office, Rauner’s 736-day manufactured budget crisis slashed funding for substance abuse and mental health services.

REALITY CHECK:

  • In 2015, Bruce Rauner vetoed critical parts of bipartisan legislation combatting heroin addiction and overdoses.
  • Opioid related deaths increased by 32% in 2016 alone.
  • One week after unveiling his opioid task force, Rauner announced he would slash funding to a critical behavioral health and substance abuse facility.
  • Due to Rauner’s budget crisis, 80,000 Illinoisans lost access to vital mental health services.

REALITY CHECK: Rauner Has Critically Mismanaged Medicaid

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Bruce Rauner has critically mismanaged Medicaid as governor, sending costs skyrocketing, handing out no-bid contracts, and slashing reimbursement rates to dangerously low levels. All of this happened on top of his 736-day budget crisis, which left providers reeling as unpaid bills piled up for over two years.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Rauner’s Medicaid overhaul has experts warning it could “destabilize Medicaid” and cause “significant care disruptions.”
  • Bruce Rauner handed out $63 billion dollars in a secret, no bid Medicaid deal.
  • That same deal came under fire from Illinois’ Chief Procurement Officer, who voided a $13 million consulting contract related to the deal that did not follow procurement laws.
  • An audit found Rauner’s administration failed to properly manage $7 billion in Medicaid payments
  • During Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis, Medicaid providers were “pushed to the brink of closure” because of unpaid state bills.
  • After Rauner racked up over $698 million in unpaid Medicaid bills, Aetna Health threatened to leave Illinois, potentially disrupting coverage for approximately 235,000 Illinoisans.

REALITY CHECK: Bruce Rauner Can’t Run the Government

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Under Bruce Rauner, whole departments of state government are not functioning. Rauner’s failure to take charge has led to crises in Veterans’ Affairs, Human Services, and Children and Family Services. This governor’s mismanagement has hurt the most vulnerable in our state, stripping families of critical services, and in some cases costing people their lives.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Bruce Rauner failed to respond to the Legionnaires’ crisis in Quincy, leading to the deaths of 13 Veterans and spouses on his watch.
  • Rauner’s secret MCO deal violated procurement law, sent costs skyrocketing to $63 billion overnight, and could destabilize Medicaid entirely.
  • Department of Children and Family Services has been plagued by dysfunction under Rauner, with investigators cutting corners and failing vulnerable children.
  • The Department of Human Services botched the rollout of a new computer system, disrupting care for thousands of individuals with mental illness.
  • Recently, the Debt Transparency Act found that Rauner agencies have failed to send billions of dollars’ worth of bills to the Comptroller’s office to be paid and have racked up $2.3 billion in debt that was never appropriated by the General Assembly in the first place.

REALITY CHECK: Rauner Decimated Tools for Illinois Seniors

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Illinois seniors have faced an all-out assault from Bruce Rauner as his 736-day budget crisis decimated funding for services they rely on for food, healthcare, and transportation. The failed governor has been anything but a champion for Illinois’ senior citizens.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Rauner vetoed a bill to protect the Community Care Program, threatening critical in-home, community-based services for seniors.
  • Because of Rauner’s budget crisis, 22,000 seniors were stripped of services such as home delivered meals.
  • Rauner’s proposed budget slashed $28 million from free and reduced-fare rides from eligible senior citizens and riders with disabilities.

REALITY CHECK: Rauner Failed Illinois Veterans

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Thirteen Veterans and spouses died from a Legionnaires crisis at the Quincy Veterans’ Home that was fatally mismanaged by Bruce Rauner. Sadly, this was just the latest disaster for a governor whose historic budget crisis devastated veterans’ services. Rauner’s misplaced priorities and failed leadership left many of our state’s heroes without the care that they deserve.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Bruce Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis halted construction of a 200-bed Veterans’ home on Chicago’s Northwest side and forced cuts to critical Veterans’ services.
  • His fatal mismanagement of the Legionnaires’ outbreak at the Quincy Veterans’ Home led to the deaths of 13 Veterans and spouses with families still waiting for answers from their failed governor.
  • Quincy staff testified that they were kept in the dark by the Rauner administration and learned of outbreaks from media reports. Rauner later accused staff of lying.
  • Despite his fatal mismanagement, Rauner maintained that he “would not do anything different.”
  • Rauner refused to take moral responsibility for the deaths, and instead pulled a political stunt as he continues to fail to get the crisis under control.

REALITY CHECK: Bruce Rauner Attacked Public Education in Illinois

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

As governor, Bruce Rauner has led an all-out assault on public education in Illinois. After forcing devastating cuts to early childhood education, K-12 schools, and Illinois’ colleges and universities with his 736-day budget crisis, Rauner held school funding hostage to force through a back-door voucher program. After vetoing historic legislation, Rauner had the nerve to call the legislation an “accomplishment,” before once again using his veto pen to derail a fix that allows the legislation to take effect.

REALITY CHECK:

  • After failing to fund MAP grants, Rauner put over 100,000 Illinois students at risk and sent tens of thousands fleeing the state.
  • Bruce Rauner dragged five public universities to junk bond status.
  • Rauner’s manufactured budget crisis slashed access to childcare and threatened closure of afterschool programs across the state.
  • After vetoing a historic school funding formula, Rauner manufactured a K-12 school funding crisis to force a back-door voucher program.
  • Rauner followed up his veto of his ‘accomplishment’ with a veto of a fix to the formula, throwing school funding back into crisis before striking a last minute deal with people he appointed.
  • Rauner proposed a 31.5% cut to Illinois universities in his 2015 budget.
  • Illinois universities were forced to lay off hundreds of employees and cut dozens of programs because of Rauner’s budget crisis.

###

REALITY CHECK: Rauner Wrecked Illinois’ Finances

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Illinois state finances have been decimated by Bruce Rauner’s staggering mismanagement and crisis driven agenda. While lurching the state from crisis to crisis, Bruce Rauner has dragged Illinois’ state credit rating to near junk bond status, tripled the state’s bill backlog while adding $1 billion dollars in late payment fees, and devastating finances for Illinois’ public university system.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Illinois’ bond rating is only one step above junk, the lowest ever for a state in the U.S.
  • During Rauner’s administration, Illinois suffered through eight bond downgrades.
  • As a result of Bruce Rauner’s budget crisis, the state bill backlog tripled.
  • Because of his fiscal mismanagement, Illinois racked up over $1 billion in late payment fees.
  • Rauner’s gross mismanagement of state finances was so bad, Illinois taxpayers paid up to 12% interest on state bonds.
  • Five Illinois universities have been downgraded to junk status, with others just a few notches above.
  • Rauner’s secret MCO scheme could destabilize Medicaid while sending costs skyrocketing.

Faces of the Budget: Seniors Suffered from Bruce Rauner’s Mismanagement

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Chicago, IL – After three years of unbalanced budgets and a historic 736-day budget crisis, Bruce Rauner’s gross mismanagement has hurt children and families across the state. This week, the Pritzker campaign is highlighting not just the numbers on spreadsheets, but the real faces harmed by Rauner’s heartless cuts.

The well-being of Illinois seniors has been jeopardized by Bruce Rauner’s budget mismanagement:

  • 80,000 seniors were left without access to critical home care services when Rauner vetoed funding for the Community Care Program.

“Seniors deserve the opportunity to live healthy, independent lives, but Bruce Rauner has undermined the tools they need to live in dignity,” said JB Pritzker. “From jeopardizing home care to slashing home-delivered meals and transportation services, Rauner has mercilessly upended the lives of Illinois seniors. We need a leader who will ensure seniors have the tools they need to thrive and that’s the leader I will be in Springfield.”

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Chicago, IL – With Bruce Rauner set to give his budget address today, the JB Pritzker campaign released a new digital ad, “Unbalanced,” highlighting Rauner’s consistent failure to introduce a balanced budget.

Year after year, Rauner has brazenly lied about introducing a balanced budget, earning the failed governor a “pants on fire” rating from PolitiFact. The new ad highlights Rauner failing to meet his constitutional duty, repeatedly lying about it, and the devastating impact on Illinois’ finances.

WATCH: “Unbalanced”

“Rauner has not only failed to introduce a balanced budget, he lied about his failures while Illinois families paid the price,” said Pritzker communications director Galia Slayen. “For three long years, Bruce Rauner has disregarded his constitutional obligation and today, Illinoisans across the state should breathe a sigh of relief as Rauner concludes his final budget address.”

Faces of the Budget: Students Suffered from Bruce Rauner’s Mismanagement

Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Chicago, IL – After three years of unbalanced budgets and a historic 736-day budget crisis, Bruce Rauner’s gross mismanagement has hurt children and families across the state. This week, the Pritzker campaign is highlighting not just the numbers on spreadsheets, but the real faces harmed by Rauner’s heartless cuts.

Students’ potential has been stifled by Bruce Rauner’s budget mismanagement as he leveraged their future and sent them fleeing. Here are the facts:

  • Nearly 130,000 students saw their MAP grants threatened during the budget crisis while Rauner vetoed their funding.
  • 72,000 fewer students enrolled in Illinois public colleges and universities.
  • 7,500 jobs were lost at higher education institutions.
  • Dozens of programs were cut at state colleges and universities.

“Bruce Rauner has led an all-out assault on public education in Illinois and stifled our students’ futures,” said JB Pritzker. “Bright young people are fleeing the state after this failed governor held their MAP grant funding hostage and wrecked the finances of our public colleges and universities. We need a governor who understands that education is the key to breaking down barriers to opportunity and building a better future. That’s the type of leader I will be for Illinois.”

Chris Kennedy Says Wolf Point Site “Not Typically Where You’d Find Affordable Housing”

Thursday, February 8, 2018

Crain’s Editorial Board Question: “Why Did You Choose To Not Have Affordable Housing In Some Of Those Developments When You Could Have?”

Chicago, IL – While meeting with the Crain’s editorial board yesterday, Chris Kennedy was asked to explain why he chose not to include affordable housing units at his Wolf Point development – and his answer was puzzling.

Kennedy claimed that the River North location of the development is “not typically where you’d find affordable housing…it’s just not where it ends up.” Kennedy invoked the luxury quality of the physical buildings when he concluded, “trying to build affordable housing 700 feet in the air in a steel and glass building is very difficult to do.”

WATCH:

“Chris Kennedy made a conscious decision to keep affordable housing units out of the Wolf Point development he manages,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “It seems that Kennedy is hypocritically contributing to the same ‘strategic gentrification’ he decries from the campaign trail.”

TRANSCRIPT

Crain’s: “So the most popular question without a doubt is about your developments in River North. Why did you choose to not have affordable housing in some of those developments when you could have?”

Kennedy: “Thank you. Um, the, the, the towers that are being built on Wolf Point, those apartment towers, have some of the highest construction costs in the city of Chicago, maybe in the United States. That’s not typically where you’d find affordable housing, in high construction cost environments; it’s just not where it ends up. I’ve, I’m in the middle of developing affordable housing in Massachusetts. And it’s a different type of construction, it’s what they call ‘stick-built,’ maybe four-story maximum, generally out of wood frame construction. You can drive the cost down making the, uh, affordable nature of that project actually affordable and economic at the same time. But trying to build affordable housing 700 feet in the air in a steel and glass building is very difficult to do.”

Equality Illinois PAC Endorses JB Pritzker for Governor

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Chicago, IL – Yesterday, Equality Illinois PAC, the state’s oldest and largest LGBTQ rights organization, endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. The endorsement comes as JB has received support of LGBTQ leaders like State Representatives Greg Harris and Sam Yingling and progressive organizations like Citizen Action/Illinois, Personal PAC, and Planned Parenthood.

“Equality Illinois has been at the forefront of expanding and protecting LGBTQ rights in Illinois for decades, and I’m so honored to have their support,” said JB Pritzker. “The passionate advocates at Equality Illinois continue to forge real change and improve the lives of LGBTQ Illinoisans across the state. I’ve been a staunch advocate for LGBTQ rights my entire life, and I will be an unwavering ally to our LGBTQ community as governor. I will fight tirelessly to protect the civil rights of every lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer person in Illinois until we achieve true equality.”

“JB Pritzker has been a strong and public champion of the LGBTQ community since long before support for LGBTQ equality was the norm among Democratic political leaders,” said Equality Illinois PAC Board Chair John Litchfield. “Going back decades, he has marched in Pride parades, worked to elect LGBTQ people to office, and supported civic organizing efforts of LGBTQ community groups to broaden support for LGBTQ equality. There are few leaders in our state who have served as courageously and consistently for LGBTQ equality over recent decades as JB Pritzker.”

“As a co-founder of Equality Illinois 27 years ago, I am proud that the Equality Illinois PAC has endorsed such a long standing champion for LGBTQ civil rights as JB Pritzker,” said Equality Illinois co-founder Art Johnston.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle Endorses JB Pritzker for Governor

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. President Preckwinkle joins U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Secretary of State Jesse White, State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia, and Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers in supporting JB’s campaign to defeat Bruce Rauner.

“Toni Preckwinkle has worked tirelessly for Cook County and I’m so proud to have her endorsement,” said JB Pritzker. “From strengthening the county’s healthcare system to reforming its criminal justice system, she has shown a deep commitment to serving the people. While Bruce Rauner slashes funding for critical services and tries to pit communities against each other, I will be Toni’s partner in the work ahead to invest in our communities and lift up Illinois families. I will be a governor who listens, brings people together, and moves our state forward and I am so proud to have Toni Preckwinkle’s support in this campaign.”

“I’ve seen JB’s record and I know what’s in his heart,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “This is a leader who has been there for our communities. From expanding early childhood education and providing school breakfasts to low-income students, to supporting critical organizations like the Center on Wrongful Convictions, the DuSable Museum, and After School Matters, JB has done the real work to build opportunity in our communities. Right now, the only question our community should be asking is who has a record of showing up for us, and I truly believe that JB is that leader.”

JB Pritzker and Juliana Stratton Statement on Chicago Tribune Report

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, JB Pritzker apologized for nine year old comments made on an illegally leaked tape published by the Chicago Tribune. At an event on the West Side of Chicago, JB was joined by Secretary of State Jesse White, City Treasurer Kurt Summers, Alderman Pat Dowell, Alderman Michael Scott, Alderman Walter Burnett, Elzie Higginbottom, John Hooker, Larry Huggins, and Everett Rand.

“I’ve been longtime friends with Jesse White for more than 35 years. He is one of our great statesmen and one of the most respected public servants in the history of Illinois. I think now as I did then that he would have made a great United States Senator,” said JB Pritzker.

“Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values. In my life, I have tried to live up to the values that my parents have taught me – the values of fighting for equality and inclusion, fighting for civil rights and social justice. That means creating jobs, providing school breakfast, and expanding early childhood education.

“I believe to my core that we are in a fight for the future of Illinois. I’m fighting every day to do the right thing for the people of this state. I think voters have seen throughout this campaign the things that I’ve done for decades now to try and lift people up and it’s that record and that vision that I hope to bring to the governor’s office.”

State Representative Juliana Stratton said, “I joined this campaign because of JB’s values, his record of helping people, and his compassion. All along, JB and I have had countless frank conversations about race, the challenges we face as a state and a country, and the path forward. He is someone who really listens and seeks to understand.

“I know JB wishes he had pushed back more on that call and I know he wishes that certain things were not said. While I am in Springfield and was unable to join him at today’s press conference, I remain proud to be on this ticket with someone I know is a better man than who he was on that tape. This is a critical election for so many of our communities and the question in front of us is who can we trust to show up for us, who has the record of lifting people up, and who has demonstrated a commitment to equity and justice. I am confident that leader is JB and I look forward to continuing our work together to move this state forward.”

Dan Biss Flails When Asked Tough Pension Questions at Crain’s Ed Board

Monday, February 5, 2018

Chicago, IL – On Friday, Dan Biss was grilled by the Crain’s editorial board where he faced a barrage of tough questions on his unconstitutional pension reform bill and his campaign rhetoric that is entirely at odds with his record. Here are some of the questions Biss was forced to address:

  • You supported an unconstitutional pension bill and since have effectively repudiated it and said you regret it. Why?
  • If the Supreme Court hadn’t objected, would you come back to something like that? Is it appropriate? Or, do you also have a moral objection now?
  • What I’m asking is a character question: if you could so completely change your opinion of something you spent so much time and energy on, what can people trust you not to change your opinion on, on other things?

“Dan Biss has spent this campaign rewriting his record and misleading voters on the facts,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “While Biss claims to be a progressive on the campaign trail, his record in Springfield tells another story and working families deserve to know the truth.”

In The News: JB Pritzker Kicks Off Second “Think Big” Bus Tour

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Clinton, IL – Yesterday, JB Pritzker kicked off his four-day, 20-stop, statewide bus tour. On the first day, JB and State Representative Juliana Stratton made stops in Bloomington, Champaign, Monticello, and Clinton to discuss their plans to create jobs, improve education, and expand healthcare for Illinois families. At the stops, they were joined by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, and supporters and volunteers from across the state.

They kicked off the second “Think Big” bus tour at the Local 99 Plumbers & Pipefitters Training Center with Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs and union members:

From WEEK:

From WGLT:

Democratic candidate for governor JB Pritzker stopped in Bloomington on Friday to deliver a fiery stump speech exclusively targeting Gov. Bruce Rauner, looking past the Democratic primary just 46 days away.

Speaking to a packed union hall, Pritzker reiterated his platform for helping “working families” across Illinois. If elected, Pritzker said he’d work with everyone—including Republicans—even while pledging to protect organized labor. Pritzker’s biggest applause came when he said “Illinois will never be a right-to-work state.” […]

Pritzker was joined in Bloomington by his running mate, state Rep. Juliana Stratton, and State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, who endorsed him.

“When Bruce Rauner chooses to spend his own money involving himself in the Democratic primary, sticking his nose into our tent, how does he choose to spend it? Does he spend it attacking Chris Kennedy? Does he spend it going after Daniel Biss? No, he spends it going after this team, because this is the team that really frightens him,” said Frerichs.

From Bloomington Pantagraph:

“(You) provide the vision and the leadership, and then you drive toward the goal, bringing people along with you. I think there’s been too little of that in Springfield,” said Pritzker. “We’re looking for ways to make it easier for working-class and middle-class families in this state to stay.”

That includes a wide range of initiatives, including promoting small business, making college more affordable, adding a public option for health care, instituting a progressive income tax and legalizing recreational marijuana use.

“As Democrats, we need to address the fundamental issues … job creation, trying to raise wages through job creation for our labor unions, but also a quality education for every child no matter where they live in the state and universal health care,” said Pritzker. “I don’t think that message has been core enough for the Democratic party for too many years.”

JB and Juliana were then joined by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Treasurer Frerichs at the second stop in Champaign where they spoke to volunteers at a JB for Governor phone bank:

From WCCU:

Gubernatorial candidate JB Pritzker kicked off his second statewide Think Big Bus Tour Friday with a stop in Champaign.

He was joined by US Senator Dick Durbin and Illinois Treasurer Michael Frehrichs.

Pritzker will make 20 stops across the state in four days.

At the third stop, JB and Juliana were joined by Senator Durbin for a meet and greet with Piatt County Democrats in Monticello:

To wrap up the day, JB and Juliana traveled to Clinton for a meet and greet with DeWitt County Democrats:
