REALITY CHECK: Rauner Has Critically Mismanaged Medicaid

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Bruce Rauner has critically mismanaged Medicaid as governor, sending costs skyrocketing, handing out no-bid contracts, and slashing reimbursement rates to dangerously low levels. All of this happened on top of his 736-day budget crisis, which left providers reeling as unpaid bills piled up for over two years.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Rauner’s Medicaid overhaul has experts warning it could “destabilize Medicaid” and cause “significant care disruptions.”
  • Bruce Rauner handed out $63 billion dollars in a secret, no bid Medicaid deal.
  • That same deal came under fire from Illinois’ Chief Procurement Officer, who voided a $13 million consulting contract related to the deal that did not follow procurement laws.
  • An audit found Rauner’s administration failed to properly manage $7 billion in Medicaid payments
  • During Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis, Medicaid providers were “pushed to the brink of closure” because of unpaid state bills.
  • After Rauner racked up over $698 million in unpaid Medicaid bills, Aetna Health threatened to leave Illinois, potentially disrupting coverage for approximately 235,000 Illinoisans.
