REALITY CHECK: Bruce Rauner Can’t Run the Government

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Under Bruce Rauner, whole departments of state government are not functioning. Rauner’s failure to take charge has led to crises in Veterans’ Affairs, Human Services, and Children and Family Services. This governor’s mismanagement has hurt the most vulnerable in our state, stripping families of critical services, and in some cases costing people their lives.

REALITY CHECK:

  • Bruce Rauner failed to respond to the Legionnaires’ crisis in Quincy, leading to the deaths of 13 Veterans and spouses on his watch.
  • Rauner’s secret MCO deal violated procurement law, sent costs skyrocketing to $63 billion overnight, and could destabilize Medicaid entirely.
  • Department of Children and Family Services has been plagued by dysfunction under Rauner, with investigators cutting corners and failing vulnerable children.
  • The Department of Human Services botched the rollout of a new computer system, disrupting care for thousands of individuals with mental illness.
  • Recently, the Debt Transparency Act found that Rauner agencies have failed to send billions of dollars’ worth of bills to the Comptroller’s office to be paid and have racked up $2.3 billion in debt that was never appropriated by the General Assembly in the first place.
