REALITY CHECK: Bruce Rauner Slashed Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Despite paying lip service to combatting the opioid epidemic, Bruce Rauner has failed Illinois’ families struggling with addiction and mental health issues. As opioid overdoses skyrocketed during his time in office, Rauner’s 736-day manufactured budget crisis slashed funding for substance abuse and mental health services.

REALITY CHECK:

  • In 2015, Bruce Rauner vetoed critical parts of bipartisan legislation combatting heroin addiction and overdoses.
  • Opioid related deaths increased by 32% in 2016 alone.
  • One week after unveiling his opioid task force, Rauner announced he would slash funding to a critical behavioral health and substance abuse facility.
  • Due to Rauner’s budget crisis, 80,000 Illinoisans lost access to vital mental health services.
