JB Pritzker Statement on Bruce Rauner’s Amendatory Veto of SB 444

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

Chicago, IL – Yesterday, Bruce Rauner amendatory vetoed SB 444, a bipartisan bill supported by the Illinois State Board of Education to fix a technical issue with implementing Illinois’ more equitable school funding formula. In response, JB Pritzker released the following statement:

“Bruce Rauner is forcing students to wait for fair funding so he can expand his back-door school voucher program, once again using Illinois children as pawns in his political games,” said JB Pritzker. “With his amendatory veto of SB 444, this failed governor is manufacturing another crisis by putting equitable school funding on hold, even after he claimed credit for the reform. SB 444 should have been signed the day it landed on Rauner’s desk to ensure Illinois schools were properly funded under the new, more equitable formula. Once again, this failed governor is attacking public education in Illinois and students will pay the price.”

JB Pritzker Calls On Rauner to Protect Safety Net Hospitals

Monday, January 8, 2018

Chicago, IL – Following reports of safety net hospitals laying off staff while cutting pay, JB Pritzker released the following statement in support of safety net hospitals:

“Safety net hospitals are the backbone of many communities, providing much needed healthcare and employing 25,000 Illinoisans statewide,” said JB Pritzker. “While these hospitals are being forced out of business, Bruce Rauner is on the sidelines, watching it happen instead of working to keep these vital institutions open. There are federal dollars we can leverage, but this failed governor refuses to act. I call on Bruce Rauner to immediately negotiate in good faith and leverage the federal funding we need to keep these critical safety net hospitals open.”

JB Pritzker Statement on Trump Administration’s Attack on Legalized Marijuana

Thursday, January 4, 2018

Chicago, IL – Today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the planned repeal of a commonsense reform that discourages prosecutors from bringing cases involving marijuana in states that legalized the use and sale of it. In response, JB Pritzker released the following statement:

“Marijuana should be legalized in a safe way, and it’s time we do that in Illinois,” said JB Pritzker. “Legalizing marijuana is a key component of reforming our criminal justice system and ending the era of mass incarceration. Instead of modernizing our approach to sentencing and moving our country forward, today’s announcement by the Trump administration directly attacks the black and brown communities most disparately affected by our broken system. As governor, I will stand up to Donald Trump’s attacks on Illinois communities, legalize marijuana, and modernize sentencing guidelines to create a criminal justice system that gives all Illinoisans a chance to reach their full potential.”
