CHICAGO, IL — This weekend, Donald Trump escalated his trade war with Canada, announcing he would be imposing 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of goods, including cars and steel. As Trump continues to harm Illinois families with his economic chaos, Darren Bailey is standing by his agenda.
Bailey has said he “believes” in Trump’s tariffs, despite household costs increasing by $2,200 and manufacturing losing 7,500 jobs. He has repeatedly described the tariffs as “short-term pain for a long-term gain” as recently as this month in front of a crowd of farmers.
In response, JB for Governor campaign spokesperson Alex Gough released the following statement:
“Darren Bailey is tone deaf. Time and again, he has vocalized his support for Donald Trump’s trade war, despite its impacts on Illinois families and farmers, proving that loyalty to Trump comes first and Illinoisans come last. Governor Pritzker, meanwhile, is standing up to Trump’s economic chaos and demanding tariff refunds for families. Illinoisans deserve leadership that supports them, not a ‘yes man’ for Trump and his agenda that has undercut them at every turn.”
