Will Bruce Rauner and His New Radical Advisers Force a Statewide School Shutdown?

Chicago, IL — As schools across the state continue to struggle from Bruce Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis, another crisis may be around the corner. Illinois schools may not open in the fall if Rauner doesn’t sign SB 1. Previously, Rauner has promised to veto the bill, even though he supports 90% of the education funding legislation.

With an influx of new radical staff coming directly from the Illinois Policy Institute, it’s worth taking a look at where the right-wing propaganda machine stands on this bill.

A March 2017 post on their website declares, “evidence-based education funding doesn’t work.” After the bill passed, they posted another article urging Rauner to veto the bill and perpetuating the myth that it is a Chicago bailout.

Rauner and the new far-right members of his administration staunchly opposing SB 1 — legislation that will allow schools to open in the fall — leaves the state on the verge of a new crisis. So what is Rauner’s plan to avert a statewide school shutdown? The latest report from the Daily Herald suggests he has no idea.

“Students and teachers across the state are hanging in the balance while Bruce Rauner threatens to veto an education funding bill that he 90% agrees with,” said JB Pritzker. “With Rauner pulling in new hires from the radical right, it’s clear he has no interest in changing course and attempting compromise. Bruce Rauner and his team of extremists are gearing up for the next crisis and planning to hold Illinois students hostage until they get their way.”
