While Darren Bailey Finally Apologized for Calling Chicago a “Hellhole,” He Has a Long Way to Go

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Darren Bailey took valuable time from the actual Chicagoans attending a city council meeting to deliver a full-blown campaign speech. In it, he offered a belated apology for repeatedly calling the city a “hellhole” over the course of his failed 2022 gubernatorial run. But one glib apology delivered four years later doesn’t erase years of bashing Chicago, and it doesn’t erase the extreme record he’s still running on.

In response, JB for Governor campaign spokesperson Alex Gough released the following statement:

“Four years later, Darren Bailey finally apologized for repeatedly calling Chicago a ‘hellhole.’ Since Bailey is in an apologetic mood, we have a few more things he should apologize for. The people of this city deserve answers on what he’s actually pledged to do before he comes asking for their votes.”

Darren Bailey still has these questions to answer about his previous statements:

  • Do you apologize for promising to “roll the red carpet out” for Donald Trump in Illinois? Have your views changed since he flooded our streets with ICE agents who harassed, threatened, and shot Chicagoans?
  • Do you apologize to the people of Highland Park for telling them to “move on” from a mass shooting while the shooter was still at large?
  • Do you apologize to Holocaust survivors and their families for comparing abortion to the Holocaust?
  • Do you apologize for co-sponsoring legislation to kick Chicago out of the State of Illinois?
  • Will you call on Trump to stop making inflammatory comments about Chicago?
  • Do you regret supporting Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago?
  • Do you apologize for calling for Governor Pritzker to be jailed for pushing back on the National Guard deployment?
