CHICAGO, IL – Today, President Donald Trump fired all three members of the Election Assistance Commission, a bipartisan agency responsible for helping states administer elections. This is just the latest in Trump’s ongoing assault on independent elections. He has attacked mail-in voting, pressured legislators to draw Trump-friendly election maps, and used the courts to all but gut the Voting Rights Act. He still won’t even admit he lost the 2020 election.
Trump has a willing partner in Darren Bailey.
Bailey has endorsed even Trump’s most outrageous election conspiracies. He said that the January 6th attack on the Capitol was “a farce,” refused to answer when a reporter asked whether Trump did anything wrong on January 6th, and would not say if Vice President Mike Pence did the right thing by certifying President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. In fact, as Trump refused to concede, Bailey stoked the flames of conspiracy, tweeting, “TRUMP…..4 more years!” insisting there had been “fraudulent activity” in the election, and saying it was “appalling” that Republicans would call on Trump to concede. He has campaigned with a January 6th insurrectionist and “Stop the Steal” activists.
Campaign spokesperson Alex Gough released the following statement:
“Governor Pritzker has shown repeatedly that he will not bend in the face of Trump’s coordinated attack on our independent elections. Darren Bailey is a conspiracy theorist who will never tell Donald Trump ‘No.’ He cannot be trusted to protect our elections.”
