#FlashbackFriday: “Crisis Creates Opportunity” Mantra Still Guides Rauner Three Years Later

Friday, April 6, 2018

Chicago, IL – Three years ago to the day, Bruce Rauner gave us a glimpse into the guiding principle that would define his governorship. Months before he forced the state into a historic budget crisis, Rauner told the Chicago Tribune:

From there on, the mantra would guide Rauner’s every move. First, Rauner manufactured a 736-day budget crisis to force an anti-union agenda on Illinois, slashing services for over a million Illinoisans along the way. Then came a school funding crisis where Rauner vetoed historic school funding legislation twice and inserted a backdoor voucher program for private schools. And, Rauner failed to stop a Legionnaires’ crisis from spiraling out of control, with 13 lives lost and dozens sickened at the Quincy Veterans’ Home and still no plan to keep our Veterans safe.

But as Rauner says, “crisis creates opportunity.” Opportunity for what remains to be seen.

“Three years ago, Bruce Rauner told us all we needed to know about how he’d govern Illinois,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “‘Crisis creates opportunity,’ Rauner said, and crisis is all Illinoisans have seen under Bruce Rauner’s failed leadership.”
