Mitchell Highlighted Cuts to Rural Healthcare Systems Across Southern Illinois and Investments Illinois Democrats Have Made to Offset Harm
SESSER, IL – Today, lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Christian Mitchell joined Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez, local elected officials, community leaders, and union members to denounce Trump and MAGA Republicans’ destruction of rural healthcare access and services across the state.
On the second stop on the “Cost of MAGA” press tour, Mitchell condemned Trump’s assault on social services and Darren Bailey’s silence on the issue. As a direct result of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, 470,000 Illinoisans are set to lose their health insurance because of cuts to Medicaid. With Republicans allowing the Affordable Care Act tax credits to expire, Illinois residents will face higher premiums, loss of coverage, and delays in care.
“Doctors, nurses, and home healthcare workers are important to Southern Illinois,” said lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Christian Mitchell. “When hospitals and doctors’ offices close, that means our workforce shrinks. That means patients must drive hours to get the care that they need. It’s a loss for everyone, and it shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Illinois Democrats believe that once you win an election, it’s your job to take care of everyone, no matter how they voted. So, while Darren Bailey continues to stand quiet, while Donald Trump and MAGA destroy access to health care, I want you to know that we have your back.”
Governor Pritzker and Illinois Democrats are fighting back, directing $50 million to community health centers to improve healthcare facilities, access to care, and to keep jobs in Southern Illinois. In addition, Gov. Pritzker signed the $24.7 million Illinois Pharmacy Support Program, to stabilize at-risk pharmacies in rural and underserved areas.
