CHICAGO, IL — Governor JB Pritzker has championed policies to lower prescription drug prices and directed state investments to uplift independent pharmacies and medically underserved communities.
In July 2025, Gov. Pritzker signed into law the Prescription Drug Affordability Act to restrict predatory pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from taking away business from local pharmacies, hiking up medication costs, and exploiting Illinois patients for profit.
This legislation imposes a fee on PBMs to fund a yearly grant program supporting local pharmacies being hurt by their shady practices. Through the program, 434 independent Illinois pharmacies will receive nearly $25 million in this year alone.
Gov. Pritzker also capped the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35 for a 30-day supply, capped out-of-pocket inhaler costs at $25 for a 30-day supply, and erased more than $1.1 billion in medical debt for more than 500,000 Illinoisans.
Gov. Pritzker is fighting every day to ensure every Illinoisan has access to affordable lifesaving healthcare. That’s why he’s committed to reducing prescription drug costs and supporting local pharmacies in every corner of the state.
