On May Day, Governor JB Pritzker Reaffirms Commitment to Illinois Workers

CHICAGO, IL – This May Day, as people across Illinois and around the world honor the hard-fought gains of workers and unions, Governor JB Pritzker reaffirms his commitment to the union members and working families across the state. Illinois has been at the forefront of the fight for fair wages and safe working conditions for all people and will continue to be a leader in that fight.

In response, JB for Governor campaign spokesperson Alex Gough released the following statement:

“Governor Pritzker has always had Illinois workers’ backs. He’s walked picket lines, defended the right to organize, and supported good-paying union jobs with the largest infrastructure program in state history. In partnership with organized labor, Governor Pritzker has helped make Illinois the most pro-worker state in the nation. On the other hand, Darren Bailey wants labor unions to ‘stay in your lane’ and has fought tooth and nail to roll back protections for workers. The fact of the matter is that when he had the chance to make a difference in the lives of working people, he chose not to. That’s disqualifying.”

Gov. Pritzker has delivered real results for working families in his first two terms. He raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour, passed the Workers’ Rights Amendment, and signed the Paid Leave for All Workers Act. He signed legislation to protect workers’ rights amid Donald Trump’s rollbacks and signed the Worker Freedom of Speech Act. He is committed to making life more affordable for all Illinoisans by eliminating the state grocery tax, reducing child care expenses, and cutting the price of prescription drugs.

While Gov. Pritzker fought for workers, Bailey was fighting against them. Bailey’s record makes his priorities clear: he sponsored a constitutional amendment to strip pension protections from the workers who earned them, opposed the Workers’ Rights Amendment, and voted against raising the minimum wage. Don’t let Darren fool you. He’s a disaster for working families.
