Giving Zero Thanks to Trump: Soaring Prices Ruining Americans’ Thanksgiving Dinners

Thanksgiving staples like sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and whipped cream more expensive under Trump’s damaging policies

CHICAGO — President Donald Trump is ruining Americans’ Thanksgiving dinners with soaring prices this holiday season. Instead of focusing on quality time together, families are being forced to worry about rising costs, driven by the Trump administration’s nonsensical tariffs and damaging economic policies.

This means families across the country are being forced to decide what they can and can’t afford to put on the table this Thanksgiving, just to make ends meet.

Americans are already feeling the strain. Thanksgiving costs are up nearly 10% this year, according to a new report by Groundwork Collaborative. Wholesale turkey prices are skyrocketing by 40%. Even the staples — spiral hams, cranberry sauce, onions, creamed corn — are costing families as much as 56% more than last year. And thanks to Trump’s tariffs, even the aluminum foil you use to wrap leftovers is 40% more expensive.

Trump promised to bring down costs. Instead, less than one year into this administration, the holidays are more expensive, from travel to groceries to gifts.

“Donald Trump doesn’t care what families are paying at the checkout line,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “While his administration pushes prices higher and higher, my administration’s been focused on lowering grocery costs and eliminating food deserts. Families should never have to choose between paying their bills and having a Thanksgiving dinner.”

Governor JB Pritzker is laser-focused on lowering costs for Illinois families, starting with the basics. That’s why he eliminated the state sales tax on groceries. And through his Illinois Grocery Initiative, Gov. Pritzker has invested $20 million to eliminate food deserts and build new grocery stores in communities like Venice that have gone without for too long — all to ensure families statewide have access to affordable, fresh produce, regardless of their zip code.

Everyone deserves affordable, nutritious meals. Governor Pritzker is committed to strengthening food access so that no Illinoisan goes hungry — or has to break the bank to put food on the table this holiday season.
